The Climate Revolving Fund of Caritas Foundation Austria is a catalytic financing mechanism that accelerates climate innovation in the Global South.
Poverty and Greenhouse Gas emissions are reduced together through the interplay of science, social and environmental innovation, and the project management of Caritas. Philanthropy serves as the overarching framework for this.
All projects in the fund are developed, initiated, scientifically evaluated, and refined in collaboration with BOKU University Vienna. This is the Caritas Foundation’s first partnership that brings together students, partners, and beneficiaries directly on the ground in the Global South.
The current projects are:
- South Sudan / Sustainable brick production and energy-efficient cooking
- Ethiopia / Distribution of efficient cookstoves
- Uganda / Community biogas plants
Each project must demonstrate:
- scientifically verified Greenhouse Gas reduction,
- measurable ecological and social impact,
- and a scalable operating model.
The current projects will have saved 68,000 tons CO2 equivalents by the end of 2031, and every climate protection contribution made by donors also contributes to the financing mechanisms for new projects.
